In the beggining, the professor referred to the fishing limits and summarized the major points of the passage. Especially, he focused on the issue of the whole rationale for size restrictions and fishing limits. In the reading passage, the population of large striped bass in Connecticut are kept because the size limit works well.
Then, the professor analyzed the argument in the reading passage and came up with several critical points which give supplemental information about the deficiency and problems included in the passage. First, he explained about more liberal regulations in Michigan which allow fisherman to take any size of panfish without predatory species. He believes that experimental evidence has called into question how necessary size limits are. He described a experiment of three lakes in northwest Michigan. Researchers only limit fishing to non-commercial fisherman fishing by pole. Under that regulation, one lake is not allowed to fish, one lake is with size limit, and one lake is no limit. And there were no differencies in size distribution. The results are quite different form the reading passage's survey.
Finally, the professor introduced the kind of fishing which has certain effect on the issue of fishing population. It was very profound and constructive to discuss fishing population. If fisherman only use a pole, there is no reason to limit for further regulations. By all these argument, the professor facilitated the better understanding about fishing population for students.
